Integrated Monitoring is combining models, sensors and big data or advanced data analysis and data fusion. Key applications, challenges and solutions of interest are described below based on the results from the workshop at our Subsea Innovation Day 19 April.

Key Applications and Challenges to be Solved

The main challenges for the subsea industry and many other ocean industries are safe and cost efficient asset, resource and environmental management and operations. Our work should support collaboration between, and coexistence, of several ocean industries. We are seeking solutions enabling:

Condition Based Maintenance:

  • To move from reactive to preventive, predictive and proactive inspection, maintenance and repair strategies.
  • Prognostics
  • Reduce costs without compromising safety and integrity
  • Improve uptime and provide information which results in product improvements

Environmental Monitoring:

  • Impact assessment and environmental footprint
  • Emergency response
  • Subsea leakage detection

Sustainable utilisation of ocean resources:

  • Improved understanding of ocean resources and ocean forecasting
  • Mapping of mineral resources
  • Growth in aquaculture

Production optimisation:

  • Increased oil recovery
  • Life cycle optimisation
  • CO2 storage

Examples of infrastructure to be monitored are; subsea production and processing equipment, flexible risers, umbilicals, power supply, flowlines, rig, fish farms, offshore renewable production facilities.

Solutions and Features of Special Interest

Could you provide ideas within the utilisation of data across applications and industries. Combining data from different sources and improved/automated data integration and analysis; This could be multipurpose sensor packages and platforms for disturbed data collection. Proposed solutions should promote collaboration, sharing of data and expertise. We are especially looking for solutions with the following features:

New/smarter sensors:

  • Low cost and small size
  • Low power and/or self-powered
  • Distributed sensing, fibre optical sensors
  • New biological sensors, but also sensors for chemical and physical parameters
  • Smarter sensors with more onboard data processing and quality assurance
  • Non-intrusive sensors

Platform, network and observation methodology:

  • Distributed sensor networks
  • Autonomous platform/sensors
  • Improved sampling models
  • Increase time and space sampling/coverage

BigData/advanced data analysis:

  • Machine learning, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence
  • Statistics, multivariate analysis and prediction based systems
  • Automated decision support
  • Data quality assurance in large/complex sensor networks
  • Operation/decision support/Data visualisation
  • Develop models for better understanding the interaction between ocean industries
